Norfolk, like Virginia Beach, and many other cities in Hampton Roads is an independent city. Located in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the country of the United States. According to data collected from the 2010 census, the population of Norfolk was 242,803. By the year of 2017 the population was estimated to have risen to 244,703. This population measurement makes it the second-most populous city in the state of Virginia, this just after Virginia Beach.
The metropolitan area in which Norfolk is located, is the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. In fact Norfolk is the core of this region. The city of Norfolk is named for a large natural harbor which is of the same name located at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. Norfolk is one of nine cities as well as the name of one of seven counties which constitute the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. This metropolitan area is officially known as the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, metropolitan area, or the VA-NC MSA. The city of Norfolk borders the Elizabeth River to the west and the Chesapeake Bay to the north. The city of Norfolk also shares land borders with other independent cities of the Hampton roads such as Chesapeake,and Virginia Beach. In fact, this is crazy Norfolk is one of the oldest cities in Hampton Roads, it is also considered to be the historic, urban, financial, and cultural center of the region.
The city of Norfolk has a long history, since the colonial days, as a strategic military and even a transportation point.
