Elizabeth City is a city located in the state of NC in the county of Pasquotank. The population of Elizabeth City was 18,683, according to the 2010 US Census. It is the county seat and largest city of Pasquotank County. Part of the Albermarle region, Elizabeth City is the cultural, economic and educational hub of the sixteen-county Historic region of northeastern North Carolina.
The city is a part of the Elizabeth City Micropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 64,094 as of 2010, according to the 2010 Census. Additionally, it is part of the larger Virginia Beach-Norfolk, VA-NC Combined Statistical Area. Elizabeth City is the economic center of the region, as well as home to many historic sites and cultural traditions.
The slogan for the city is the “Harbor of Hospitality”. Due to the narrowed bend of the Pasquotank River the city has had a long history in the shipping industry. In 1794, Elizabeth City was founded and was successful in its early growth. Once a Dismal Swamp Canal a mercantile city, the city later shifted into various industrial areas and developed a commercial focus. Elizabeth City still retains its extensive waterfront property. It, along with neighboring towns and counties serves as the site of the largest US Coast Guard base in the nation.
At the congressional level, Elizabeth City is served by US Representative G. K. Butterfield as the city occupies North Carolina’s First Congressional District.
