Jaclyn Downs, an expert in functional genomics & author, joined us for Season 2, Episode 7 of The Healing Law Podcast.

Inspired in childhood by a parent who focused on genuine nutrition, & enabled in her gene-studies by career opportunities, Jaclyn takes her feature time to inform viewers all about the effects of stress on the body, the multiple layers of gut health, & how the study of genes actually works.

🕳️Down The Rabbit Hole: A Deeper Teaser

There were two overarching topics that stood out during this interview with Jaclyn: the basics of functional genomics & stress.

Ignoring The Forest For A Single Sprout: Genomic Red Flags

Despite the study of genetics being so complex as a whole, Jaclyn manages to make her expertise translatable to the average viewer as she lays out what role(s) genes play in the grand-stage of the body through activation, function, & expression.

She also made sure to include what people should look for when seeking out someone to interpret their genetics- as is par for the course with functional genomics-, because many programs claim that they will be thorough, while actually only focusing on a single gene. This practice of interpreting a genetic profile so frivolously is, essentially, equivalent to viewing one piece of a thousand part puzzle after throwing away the rest of the box.

Fleeing Woodland Foes Or Reneging Attendance At A 9-5: Stress Differentiation

Jaclyn also lays out the different types of stress that bodies encounter throughout everyday life while introducing an interesting tidbit of information. The catch with stress is that: our bodies don’t actually differentiate between stressors very well! Thus, our bodily stress reactions tend to be disproportionate to the stressor we’re actually facing. What used to be a helpful survival tactic when humans lived rough & found themselves more regularly in greater peril, is now something that causes chronic illness & digestive issues when we find ourselves late for meetings or facing other comparatively “minor” stressors.

Thankfully, Jaclyn came with some solutions in hand! She also discusses what she personally believes the modern interpretation of the phrase, “survival of the fittest,” truly is. Additionally, Douglas & Jaclyn engage in a small, but significant, sidebar on the corrupt dealings of popular DNA collecting sites.
