Season 2, Episode 3 of The Healing Law Podcast features Luis Mojica, author of Food Therapy: Conscious Eating To Navigate Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma and founder of Holistic Life Navigation, a somatic healing network.
WIth a focus on spreading the joys of somatic healing, Luis is an authority on a multitude of topics that encompass the connections between food, the mind, & the body and he holds nothing back in his feature.
TLDR: A Taste Of The Episode
Luis divulges the path he took to be the somatic healer & nutritionist he is now through his past experiences, motivations, & observations. He also talks about the physical expression of traumas & inner dialogues; plus his realization that food contributes significantly to the presentation and management of our internal worlds.
Luis & Douglas also talk about how technology overuse lends itself to insomnia, stress, & depression through the alteration of the sleep-cycle and the interruption of humanity’s innate dopamine production.
Manifesting Trauma: The Mind-Body Connection
Luis paints a picture of the connection between the traumas & doubts we harbor in our minds and how they show up in our physical bodies. For example, when recalling traumas we’ve encountered, we may tense up in certain places, curl into ourselves, or guard specific places of our bodies. When experiencing doubt, it manifests physically through a tightening of jaw, a raising of shoulders, or in other ways that may very well interrupt our performance in the activity we’re doubting ourselves over.
This phenomenon, Luis explains, is why he emphasizes the importance of focusing on healing methods that simultaneously encompass body & mind.
A Palatable Palindrome: Healing Body By Healing Mind
The healing method that Luis proposes, and personally practices, is somatic healing. He explains that somatic healing is body centered– it targets where trauma & ill-feelings live inside of one’s body and works on releasing those unpleasant mind & body dwellers from their hiding places.
Luis & Douglas discuss how the creation, and playing, of music is a somatic experience because it immerses the full-body in its sensations, helps to relax the mind, and involves the un-tensing areas that are housing stress. Luis also brings up another area of healing focus for his practice with clients, which is their relationship with food.
Throughout his career as a nutritionist & somatic healer, Luis observed how our diets express themselves through our mental states, and how our mental states in-turn unconsciously alter our diets. He says that foods can fit within 3 categories: stimulants, depressants, & balancers. For example, if someone is having a stressful day, they may turn to breads, pastas, & oily foods to “depress” them, or if they need more energy, they’ll turn to sodas and blatantly sugary or caffeinated drinks to “stimulate” them. All of his research led him to write the book Food Therapy: Conscious Eating To Navigate Anxiety, Stress, And Trauma.
A Chilling Reality: The Dopamine Dupe
Luis & Douglas’ final episode topic centers around how screentime & processed foods rob our dopamine production and dupe our brains into seeking instant dopamine gratification through constant on-screen stimulus & unhealthy eating. Luis expounds upon the fact that humans are made to work for dopamine, and that it is meant to release slowly through the accomplishment of small tasks that lead up to the completion of an activity. This slow-release dopamine production is aptly named “active dopamine”; versus the addictive “passive dopamine” acquired from sedentary activities, such as scrolling social media, viewing visually arousing content, or consuming ultra-processed foods.
The constant overdosing of dopamine that humans are exposed to today causes a “freeze response”, or a significant nervous system reaction, when our dopamine levels drop. This freeze response involves feelings of overwhelm, loss of motivation, & bodily tenseness. Within his book, he describes various methods to help break out of the freeze response, ranging from short-term stress-relieving somatic exercises to long-term, steady diet alteration through the introduction of “balancer” foods.
A Natural Approach & A Guiding Hand
Luis himself found healing from trauma through renegotiating his own relationship with food, involving himself in music creation, & other somatic means. Now, he aims to help others do the same.
